Mission Statement

Every Friday the JOBC staff scours the internet to bring you Cubs-related video and audio you might not have seen or heard before.

Happy Birthday America! We've got some very all-American baseball moments for you this week in Sights & Sounds.

*Ernie Harwell is well known as the long-time voice of the Detroit Tigers, but in the 1950s he released this record which will give the All-American baseball fan chills. It really is a beautiful essay called "The Game For All America." (It mentions at least one Cub...Rabbit Maranville)

*What have the Cubs ever done for America? We've featured this in April to commemorate the anniversary, but it seems fitting to bring it back on July 4th. VIDEO: Rick Monday saves the American Flag

*July 4th is also the anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. It's not a Cubs moment, but it is one of the most memorable moments in baseball history. If Gehrig's attitude in the face of adversity doesn't sum up the American spirit, I don't know what does.

*This week we also featured the mustache of Hall of Famer Goose Gossage. Here are a few Goose moments that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Notice in the Letterman clip...he still sports that dynamic facial hair today.

This clip of Gossage, on the other hand, is Lee Elia-esque. I'm pretty sure they won't be playing it at his Hall of Fame induction ceremony. (WARNING: Bad Language)

If you have any Cubs songs you've written or discovered, let us know and we'll feature it on a future episode of "Sights & Sounds." E-mail our editor-in-chief Rick Kaempfer at rick@justonebadcentury.com
